How to recover an expired domain's SEO value: a step-by-step checklist.
You bought an expired domain for its SEO authority. Now what? Here is the exact checklist I use to restore the original content, preserve the topic structure, and avoid Google's expired-domain abuse penalty.
You bought an expired domain. Maybe it had good backlinks. Maybe it had years of authority in a niche you target. Maybe you found it on an auction and the metrics looked good.
But buying the domain is the easy part. What you do next determines whether you preserve the SEO value or destroy it. Google's March 2024 policy update explicitly treats planting unrelated content on expired domains as spam. If you do this wrong, you lose the domain's authority and get nothing.
Here is the checklist I use when recovering expired domains for clients. It is based on 50+ restorations, not theory.
Step 1: Audit the domain before you do anything
Before you restore any content, understand what the domain was about:
- Check the Wayback Machine: what did the site look like at its peak? What was the main topic?
- Check backlink profile: use Ahrefs, Semrush, or Ubersuggest to see what sites link to it. Are the links relevant to a topic you can continue?
- Check for penalties: search the domain in Google. If nothing comes up, it may be penalized. Check Google Search Console (if you can verify ownership).
- Check spam score: Moz's spam score will tell you if the domain was used for spam before it expired.
If the domain was a health blog, restore health content. If it was a tech blog, restore tech content. Do not put unrelated content on it. That is exactly what Google's expired-domain abuse policy targets.
Step 2: Recover the original content
This is where most people fail. They either:
- Put fresh AI-generated content on the domain (triggers the abuse policy)
- Recover only the homepage and leave the rest empty (loses 90% of the value)
- Recover content but change the URL structure (breaks all backlinks)
The right way: recover the original archived content from the Wayback Machine, including:
- All blog posts and articles
- Category and tag pages
- The original URL structure (permalinks)
- Images (where available)
- Internal linking structure
I use a custom capture pipeline that recovers every page, including parametric URLs (?p=, ?id=) that most tools skip. For a 500-page site, this takes about 2 hours of automated capture. For a 3,000-page site, about a day.
Step 3: Clean the recovered content
Content from the Wayback Machine comes with junk: archive toolbars, tracking beacons, dead links, outdated contact information, and footer dates from 2014. All of this needs to be cleaned before the content goes live.
I use AI-assisted cleanup to handle this at scale. The pipeline:
- Strips archive artifacts (Wayback toolbar, injected scripts, tracking pixels)
- Fixes internal links (removes
/web/20220101/prefixes) - Updates footer dates to the current year
- Removes the previous owner's contact details and purchase links
- Flags suspicious content for human review (not auto-removes, flags)
Step 4: Set up 301 redirects for missing pages
Not every page from the original site will be recoverable. The Wayback Machine may not have captured every URL. For pages that cannot be recovered, set up 301 redirects to the closest relevant page.
For example: if /blog/old-post-that-was-never-archived/ cannot be recovered, redirect it to /blog/ or to the most topically similar post that was recovered.
This preserves the link equity from external backlinks pointing to that URL. Without the redirect, those backlinks point to a 404 and their value is lost.
Step 5: Restore in WordPress (not as static HTML)
Do not upload the recovered content as static HTML files. Put it in WordPress:
- Each archived page becomes a WordPress page or post
- URL structure matches the original (Settings - Permalinks)
- Sitemap is generated automatically
- You can edit and update content going forward
- Google sees a real CMS, not a static archive

Step 6: Submit to Google Search Console
Once the site is live with recovered content:
- Add the domain to Google Search Console
- Submit the sitemap
- Use URL Inspection to check key pages (homepage, top blog posts)
- Request indexing for the homepage and 5-10 key pages
Google will re-crawl the site and see that the original content is back. This is the signal that tells Google "this domain is alive again, with its original topic."
Step 7: Monitor for the first 30 days
After recovery, watch Search Console closely:
- Indexed pages: should grow steadily as Google re-crawls
- Impressions: should start appearing within 1-2 weeks
- Crawl errors: check for 404s on URLs that were not recovered (add 301 redirects)
- Manual actions: check Security and Manual Actions for any penalties
If impressions do not start appearing after 2 weeks, something is wrong. Usually it is one of: unrelated content (abuse policy), missing redirects (broken backlinks), or a pre-existing penalty on the domain.
The checklist (print this)
- Audit domain topic, backlinks, spam score, penalty history
- Capture all original content from Wayback Machine
- Clean archive artifacts, fix links, update dates
- Set up 301 redirects for unrecoverable URLs
- Restore in WordPress with matching URL structure
- Configure SSL, sitemap, Cloudflare
- Submit to Search Console, request indexing
- Monitor impressions, indexed pages, crawl errors for 30 days
